Northern Lights Photo Spots in Iceland

Iceland is dark enough for aurora Sep–Mar, and not at all in midsummer. All 121 locations in the catalog carry their own darkness window.

Aurora needs darkness, and Iceland spends half the year without enough of it. Every location below is scored on astronomical darkness calculated from its own coordinates — the hours per night when the sun sits far enough below the horizon for aurora to register on a sensor. The season runs Sep–Mar, peaks in December, and is simply not possible in June or July anywhere in the country.

Darkness is computed, not surveyed. Aurora activity depends on solar weather no one can predict months out; what a map can tell you is where and when the sky is dark enough to try.

Hours of astronomical darkness on an average night, at Reykjavík’s latitude. Months without a figure never get dark enough.

Locations with the longest aurora windows

Ranked by darkness hours in December, then by drive from Reykjavík. Northern and inland locations edge out the south coast — but a dark sky with nothing in front of it is still a photograph of nothing, so foreground is in the notes on each page.
