Driving the Ring Road in March: which viewpoints to plan around
In March the Ring Road is ploughed and usually open, but every highland F-road is closed, daylight runs from about 10 to 13.5 hours, and the south coast is the reliable half of the loop. Plan the trip around the south coast as far as Jökulsárlón, treat the north and east as weather-dependent, and keep at least two flex days so a storm closure does not cost you a region.
- Rule out the interior first. The F-roads stay closed all month, so Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk are not detours you can add. The F-roads guide explains what opens, when, and what the closures actually mean for a route.
- Anchor the loop on the south coast. Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey and Jökulsárlón sit on ploughed Route 1 and give you the most usable light per driving hour. The location index carries season and access notes for each.
- Book the winter-only subjects early. March is the last reliable month for both ice caves and aurora. Put the ice-cave day and the dark-sky nights into the plan before you fill the daylight hours, not after.
- Use the daylight you have. Ten to thirteen hours is enough for a full south-coast day, but not for a long drive plus two hikes. Pick one anchor stop per day and let the 10-day route set the distances.
- Keep a bad-weather plan. Check road.is and vedur.is each morning. When the south coast is under a wind warning, the aurora and darkness page and the Ring Road guide are the places to re-cut the next two days rather than drive into it.
